Problem with ill audio sound, what could it be ?

macbook alu late 2008
os x version 10.9.4
ssd samsung (a couple of months old)

incident: audio output 'corrupted'. its ill, has scratch in throat , slower.

how happened:
listened few music files when sound ok turned off macbook.
turned on, copied music files external hdd , sound no longer ok. not ok on either new music files or previous files listened before.
tried open files different software vlc, quicktime spacebar (preview) , still not ok. tried restart.

hardware ? doubt virus. or have pressed accidentally shortcut make changes ?
 

is distorted sound on internal speakers only?
did check sound quality headphones, too?

New 2014 Mac Mini as living room media unit... general questions :)

hi everyone, relatively new apple world (came on android/windows) can impressed , happy made switch hoping insight experts here new setup. got new 2014 mini our living room media unit (will playing music, netflix, movies, internet browsing etc) - havent hooked yet. have 2 bookshelf speakers, 1 sub woofer, , center speaker sound setup goes avr, , of course flat screen tv. 1) question -- mini support 2.1 sound via hdmi avr? losing audio quality or audio features using mac mini? 2) internet browsing, there app or interface make ui better fit living room tv? i've read font/icons can hard read if enlarge them because mac mini not meant big tv? 3) plan plex server , plex media player mac mini, other loading movie/tv collection , playing off tv, there else cool missing here can this? 4) if have mac mini media unit, there purpose in owning roku @ point? thank you!!   ...
