No longer able to read audio CDs

i have late 2009 imac running os 10.9.5 , itunes 12. whenever load audio cd optical drive message "the disk inserted not readable computer". drive reads dvds fine , external drive running 10.10 w/itunes 12 reads audio cds without issue.

i've repaired permissions, resest smc, , checked itunes preferences without luck in fixing issue. short of downgrading itunes, there i've forgotten investigate? tia

should add, purchased third-party drive , produces same message.

even though question looks simple, may toughest question on forum. going car mechanic , saying, "when open door, dome light won't come on." there bazillion reasons.

here's suggest.

make sure there's no cd in drive. then, go applications/utilities , fire "console." make sure "show system messages" selected.

now, while console running, insert cd.

watch , read whatever console says, maybe there clue there. if it's nothing obvious, copy-and-paste console says, right here in forum.

we'll figured out!
