Startup Manager: Windows and EFI Boot, remove EFI Boot

so followed this excellent guide install windows 8.1 external usb 3 drive. works great , ssd , usb 3 combo make super fast , stable after installing bootcamp drivers.

issue, cosmetic. when option boot, 2 icons external drive, windows , efi boot. windows partition boots expected, efi boot nothing. want hide it. tried deleting it, , windows partition stopped working, know needed.

can hide efi boot partition option statup manager?

i tried using guide before failed on me big time. guide on there lets install windows in emulated bios environment , not in uefi environment.

after experimenting, came current method works via uefi well. @ boot selection screen, efi boot show up. native uefi installation preferable.

here goes. it's easier , not use imagex. rather, uses built-in dism.exe utility.

connect external drive windows vm. must have windows vm in vmware/parallels/vbox, or windows pc. existing windows environment do.

need:
install.wim file (obtain windows iso)

open elevated cmd.exe (run admin)

note: commands aren't case sensitive, including pathway files.

type diskpart
type list disk
take note of disk want select
type select disk 1 (if disk disk 1)
type clean
type convert gpt
type create partition efi size=100
type format quick fs=fat32 label=efi
type assign letter=s
type create partition primary
type format fs=ntfs quick label=w2g (or other name wish label)
type assign letter=e
type exit

open file explorer. in c drive, create new folder named win2go.
put install.wim file in folder

in cmd.exe:
type dism /apply-image /imagefile:c:\win2go\install.wim /index:1 /applydir:e:\ (this process take quite while)
type e:\windows\system32\bcdboot e:\windows /s s: /f uefi

restart entire mac. after chime, hold down option , when prompted select boot drive, select efi boot.

proceed installation normally.

after installation, install boot camp drivers. feel free trash vm once you're done too.

best results, use usb 3/thunderbolt. if don't have usb 3, use thunderbolt. if have neither, stick internal drive :)
