Resolved Trouble connecting ASUS PB278QR to iMac

i bought new 27" asus pb278qr monitor imac (27-inch, mid 2011) thunderbolt.

had mini displayport dvi adapter when use that, 1920x1080 resolution , not expected 2560x1440. have learned due adapter being single link dvi. fair enough!

bought hdmi mini display port cable @ apple. worked worse. i'm not sure resolution was. picture looked terrible. returned cable.

bought mini-displayport adapter cable. did not work @ all. when plug in, monitor goes black, shows picture half second, goes black again. there nasty noise speakers.

called store , send me cable of same type. have yet receive it. must doubtful. have experience connecting 2560x1440 non-tunderbolt monitor thunderbolt mac? cable did use?
 

i received replacement cable. , works now! guess faulty cable.

New 2014 Mac Mini as living room media unit... general questions :)

hi everyone, relatively new apple world (came on android/windows) can impressed , happy made switch hoping insight experts here new setup. got new 2014 mini our living room media unit (will playing music, netflix, movies, internet browsing etc) - havent hooked yet. have 2 bookshelf speakers, 1 sub woofer, , center speaker sound setup goes avr, , of course flat screen tv. 1) question -- mini support 2.1 sound via hdmi avr? losing audio quality or audio features using mac mini? 2) internet browsing, there app or interface make ui better fit living room tv? i've read font/icons can hard read if enlarge them because mac mini not meant big tv? 3) plan plex server , plex media player mac mini, other loading movie/tv collection , playing off tv, there else cool missing here can this? 4) if have mac mini media unit, there purpose in owning roku @ point? thank you!!   ...
