i'm architect , need portable computer go dell workstation week or per month out of office. have asus laptop, on last legs, i've ordered base model, mid 2014 retina macbook pro 13".
use 2d autocad mac (acquired 2013 licence retiring ex colleague), sketchup, microsoft office (word/excel/outlook) or ilife equivalent , infrequently photoshop , microsoft publisher (or equivalent) i'll use browsing via. firefox, max 5 tabs open @ a time. use doing bit of recording via garage band, maybe netflix when out , etc.
said, i've ordered base model, after further research think should maybe have specked bit base. 8gb of ram suffice autocad demanding programme , recommends 4gb (3gb minimum), i'm covered there. 128gb blade ssd again should fine (although consider upping 256gb) save data , external drives via. usb 3, have 250gb samsung evo 840 ssd in caddy leave hooked machine majority of time storing files.
thinking should go 2.8ghz processor £80 upgrade on stock 2.6ghz, due steep increase in benchmarks. worth expense? base model £999, mid model (2.6ghz/256gb/8gb) £1199 , top spec (2.8ghz/512gb/8gb) £1399.
i'd prefer not go base 15" don't want bulk, unless can make strong case machine being more suitable workload? i'm thinking away macbook air, time add 8gb ram upgrade £849 13" model, cost difference between air , pro negligible!
advice , opinions appreciated. macbook pro due arrive tomorrow, i've spoken apple , have said have fortnight have play , see if want return or keep it.
run , see
yopu have 14 days return load , see how goes, far can tell autocad runs on 1 core faster processor more cache may useful if runs , happy why not keep getand save cash.
