so handed down mac pro 3,1. comes following specs:
2.8ghz 8-core xeon 36gb ddr2 ecc ram 640gb (2x320gb raid-0 software) 7200rpm hard drive nvidia gtx285 1gb video card
besides hard drives, else possible upgrade on system? looking @ 3.2ghz quad xeons 150 watt power vs current 80 watt disappointing. maybe upgrade 3.0ghz 200mhz, don't know if should spend time , effort in upgrade. i'm not looking upgrade right maybe within 6 months down road slowly.
i'm surprised machine supported 10.5 way till now. how think system supported after yosemite?
personally think it's got @ least 1 more os revision before it's abandoned, have longer run. depends on apple "officially" supports, probably--i suspect 10.8+ on 1,1 , 2,1 mac pros, there ways prolong shelf life.
sticking ssd in boot drive provide nice boost off raid drive in terms of speed. other that, can graphics card. don't think of 2008 processor upgrades worth cost get, reasons you've outlined.
