MBA + monitor --> demands external power


my mid-'12 mba, when connect hp 2009m monitor, won't work unless mba on external power. since monitor has it's own power, mba should pushing pixels , not using lot of power, correct? there override? don't see in energy saver. extending battery life utmost , keeping mba on external power will shorten battery life. $139.00 lesson learned @ apple store.

edit: running yosemite, same occurred under mavericks , mlion.
 

as far understand keeping on power doesn't ruin anything, in fact prevents constant drain of battery saves battery life advice plug in
