Bad Hard Drive vs Damaged Cables

hey everyone. i've got mid-2012 refurbished macbook pro. i've been getting spinning ball quite across applications. it's crippled workability of laptop. have wait quite bit simple programs such chrome or firefox open tabs. however, sort of comes , goes. there brief moments computer seems run fine go again bouts of freezing.

running snow leopard (i think) when spinning ball started , decided upgrade yosemite see if fix problem. hasn't made difference @ all.

i've run computer in diagnostic mode, i've run disk utility trial version of program see if there hardware/disk issues, keep getting clean bill of health. in research, i've discovered isn't indicative of bad hard drive though.

activity monitor shows low memory pressure i'm assuming there's not issue memory. computer has 300+ gb of available space it's not matter of "full" computer.

importantly though, believe may have accidentally dropped computer in sleepy haze quite recently. lame , honest, don't recall how bad drop or if happened before problems, hunch is related.

question if it's possible tell whether laptop's hard drive cables damaged (on own) , whether root of problems? i've read on forums they're quite delicate. relatively newer laptop, i'm hoping it's not signs of flat-out hard drive failure, what's best route here? literally leaving country second-world country in few days , don't have time figure out , unlikely able repair overseas. i'm bringing apple store tomorrow, i've preferred on-my-own work can these sorts of things.

i've indeed backed files , tried reset pram , that. haven't done control+r reboot. i'd prefer not unless it's absolutely recommended. i'm kind of on tight budget these days, as sdd upgrade sounds appealing, if need new hard drive, i'm gonna go basics of comp needs run. write, listen music, watch movies/videos, , lightly play low-usage games.

appreciate help!

slight edit: in safe mode computer struggles lagging/freezing/spinning ball. in ways, seems worse in safe mode if that's possible. i've had few times click login, spinning ball comes , sits there ages until decide force-shut down computer.

i'm more inclined think hdd on way out.

thing hdds fail more ssds, because they've moving parts.

mavericks , yosemite don't play hdds.
