i photographer , work on road 2011 macbook pro 17”, 3g owc 1tb ssd in optical bay lightroom catalogs , samsung 1tb 850 pro in hard drive bay 1 partition system , user directory. there’s no doubt it’s useful life has been extended ssd’s, , need storage, no retina me… anyway, mac pro, don’t use often, eek life out of, too. have been buying upgrades; sonnet pro card, usb card, ssd’s. may missing trick or 2 when comes best setup, advice gratefully received.

predictably, work in lightroom , photoshop. lr catalogs , images on raid0 hard drives, system , home folder on sonnet pro.

2x4tb wd red in raid0

card slot #1 (pcie 2.0 x16) nvidea geforce 8800gt

card slot #2 (pcie 2.0 x16) sonnet tempo ssd pro plus 2x 512gb samsung 840 pro in raid0, 100gb partition boot volume macintosh system , 923gb partition home directory; 950mb/s read.

card slot #3 (pcie 1.0 x4) inateck 4 ports pci-e usb 3.0 expansion card

card slot #4 (pcie 1.0 x4) cheap pcie sata iii , esata controller card, asm1061, connected esata hd dock (this card lets me hot swap drives in dock, whereas esata ports on sonnet pro don’t). link speed 6 gigabit, negotiated speed 1.5 gigabit, due dock imagine; can 6 gigabit link on internal ssd, though in slot #1 , #2.

install 1x 128gb samsung 830 , 1x 120gb samsung 840 evo in raid0 in lower optical bay, connected 2 sata ports on motherboard, use scratch/cache disk ps , lr.

upgrade ram 12gb 32gb cheap ram ebay (fingers crossed).

i’m little unsure of how best set hard drive bays; i’d have around 6tb of storage lr catalogs, , rest can assigned safety backups , additional storage. not sure hd’s use, either; red’s noticeably quieter, black’s measure 280mb/s read vs. 200mb/s red’s.

should assign partition on sonnet pro lr catalog working on (with images on hard drives)? believe might speed things in lr, perhaps not it’s boot card (currently catalogs images on hard drives). or should working catalog go on scratch disks below optical bay?

, finally, might try little bootcamp , windows in future, if allowed modest gaming.

the ram best upgrade can do, far - given you've got ssd's going already. newer, faster gpu may solid improvement if apps use gpu accelerated. take @ evga gtx680 mac edition - monumental improvement aging 8800 you've got currently. there's radeon hd 7950 mac edition, lower price, , monumental upgrade current gpu, though not sure if 7950 mac edition compatible 2008 mp's.


other real thing upgrade cpus, don't know how cost, , if worth it.

Error installing Key Agent drivers in Windows 7

i reinstalled fresh bootcamp (windows 7 x64) on imac running yosemite. i'm having difficulty installing drivers, had first bypass issue x64bit drivers running through cmd admin errors "service 'key agent/mac hal' (keyagent/machaldrivers) failed start. verify have sufficient privileges start system services." have tried following instructions seemed answer this: i had exact same problem, on 17" mbp. in case, win7 event manager reported bootcamp 3.2 services failed install, in particular keyagent service (and without no apple keyboard , functions , apparently bootcamp icon doesn't show in system tray). event manager said bootcamp installer did not have sufficient permissions, went dial down user account control (uac) settings (in fact, turned off). should have seen when bootcamp 3.2 update running window ask permission continue (allow software install). instead, there silent failure. ok, turning off uac gives p
