for awhile people have been asking tb egpu cards. , said wasn't interested , didn't think work.
, said had nothing offer, accounts read spoke of hacking kexts. , our specialty has been re-writing efis make cards work in mac pros. had read accounts people used mac efi cards , got same results people using pc bios (and uefi) cards got. had same success, , same issues. 100% belief efi had nothing offer, therefore had nothing offer.
did digging. , bought tb enclosure. , realized cmp referencing older tables in it's efi. (40 vs 41, if must know). updated tables, , made few minor other changes...and guess what?
turns out having efi on tb enclosure card quite beneficial, trick being had efi hasn't existed before. newly modded form takes account changes in macs. cupertino has once again eschewed uefi industry standard , used 1 little different, little off. not mac pro efi, own.
so, writing new different custom efi have been able make gtx680 not run cuda in 2014 mini (or 2012 rmbp), show boot screens. "new" thing efi brings table. past egpu efforts relied on self-init feature of newer drivers. if had driver issues or wanted switch boot disks had unplug egpu , plug in mini. capability can plug mini box can sit anywhere , have mini sporting gtx680. solves dreaded issue "code 12" running bootcamp. windows didn't know card there since wasn't introduced during efi boot , wouldn't set aside ram it.
see mini , nmp being principle beneficiaries of tech, though laptops , imacs can use them.
why bother ask? well, if told able use gtx780 6gb in bottom-of-the-barrel mini , score higher opengl valley score shipping mac tested barefeats.com? so, if want high powered opengl, skip nmp , $500 bobby-soxer mini , wait tb enclosure & 780 combo? obviously, there other considerations, seeing stumbling , stuttering mini burst high-powered opengl machine made me realize more flash in pan.
1 thing can tell there tremendous amount of testing done. (hence post, i'll it). 2012 rmbp , 2014 mini show different behavior. notably mini limited running screen boot screen shows on, , 1 alone. tells me apple's doing, mini full of artificial limitations, feel yet another. , while 2012 rmbp work unflashed cards (minus boot screen & code 12 error in windows) , can run many displays card capable of running, mini work efi flashed cards. may apple has added reason noted above, mini gtx780 leaves other macs dead in opengl.
have posted in mini section trying see if else has gotten egpu working in 2014 mini obvious choice being first tb2. best forum stuff "diy egpu" @ tech inferno. can't find there either, have trouble navigating site.
gets me why began post. have every reason believe same modded efi work in nmp. sadly, don't have one. here little fantasy, somewhere in la production office bought 1 try out. lack of cuda deal breaker , pretty little creature @ front desk suing facebook puppy pictures , sending in afternoon latte order.
love borrow 1 few hours. failing @ least drive on little creation , see if boot screens work, test take 2 minutes, provided have non tb monitor.
kind soul word mac world faster bidding on various units on ebay going too. have 1 here, love first answer soon.
oddly, diy egpu site doesn't seem have reports nmp find. interesting if apple modded nmp behave mini, i.e., way see efi card.
either way, have answer enough, have lost 3 bids on nmp far.
yes, bandwidth constrained tb, mini's valley score internal gpu 3.4 fps on valley. gtx680 becomes 34.6, literally ten times faster. 780 gets 50s. transforms thing.
, quick "happy birthday" gpus in nmp, turned 3 years old. here chance sidestep them, add cuda, or enjoy thumbing nose @ apple , artificial rules , limits.
fact of matter apple , intel have done nothing since day 1 throw roadblocks in way of egpus. tb stuff great them long sells things want sell. neither of them wants sell gpus have refused ratify egpu except couple of $1,000 enclosures. (and still have hack drivers)
keep eye on space, forward announcing nmp can upgraded newer nvidia gpus , screen shots. hoping have in la me make happen sooner later, either way info come out.
