Can someone help me choose?

i'm torn between 2 drastically different cameras @ 2 drastically different price points.

nikon cool pix point , shoot.

nikon d3300

i'm noob @ photography, love it. want learn more cameras , and methods of photography in general (my best friend's art major , can teach me things) , turn serious hobby. dslr seems overkill @ $499, i'm worried i'll underwhelmed $199 point-and-shoot. didn't want spend on $200, want investment.

i'm iphone user, i'm disappointed iphone 6's camera , want less grain in low lights (i know grain inevitable) , better, sharper photos iphone can provide.

can of photography savvy users me? think cheaper p&s worth upgrade iphone or think should go out dslr? have suggestions on better dslr? can't (won't) spend more $499.

i perhaps mirrorless cameras. great cameras , lot of photographers (even pro photographers) utilize them or have switched on them. best buy carries sony series. sony a5000 great camera, lacks optical viewfinder , favors powerful live viewfinder (digital screen). a6000 believe adds on optical viewfinder, grows bit in price. olympus , fujifilm carry great options , love have offer.
