Moving from Tape to Cloud - options, thoughts and opinions.

we're starting out new year @ our small design studio re-analyzing our need archiving completed projects tape.

while relatively inexpensive regarding cost/gb - have nurse aging macpro. retrospect finicky - lose connection drobo (where completed projects stored) or lose connection scsi bus. @ best, requires restart, @ worst, interrupts archiving process creating multitude of verification errors, etc.

so, while have functional system in place, i've been tasked @ least researching our alternatives. crashplanpro backup each mac (7 in total) cloud. our drobo gets backed nas connected machine running retrospect. so, in sense, stuff in cloud.

here's our dream scenario - project finished, collected, pruned of unnecessary files , moved folder on artist's workstation called "completed" - folder "watched" changes. when new files added, uploaded cloud service. here's kicker. after they're uploaded, want delete them local "completed" folder , have files stored long-term cloud service. ideally, retrieval no more difficult tape - search job number, file name, etc., , download necessary. retrieval rare occurrence, feasible these items move "cold" storage.

can sort of there crashplan - requires each artist move files drobo - do. drobo fills - remove older files. believe crashplan store deleted files year. @ point, projects removed drobo (or other source device) removed cloud.

i've looked amazon glacier option - far i've gotten. process seems horribly convoluted - , upload/retrieve in meaningful , user-friendly manner require use of software such arq or syncovery. rather set-it-and-forget-it process.

typically have project folders go 2-5gb range. our drobo houses 3tb of completed projects, easy access. our recent batch of tapes started in june 2013 8tb. we'll need hefty amount of space store stuff long-term. we're not talking enterprise-grade. of services i've found long-term storage enterprise-level cold storage of server assets , like. nothing creatives work large batches of large files.

anyhow - thought i'd throw out there discussion. may have missed service, or other obvious solution others have tried or implementing. welcome thoughts , feedback. thanks!
