Advice: Is it worth upgrading a black Macbook?

hi new site long time apple user.

wanted advice on project i'm wanting do.

want older black macbook , put on steroids. (for lack of better term)
ssd hard drive
ram, etc.

have been looking on ebay.

guess questions are:

opinions on doing this?
price pay one?

in high school , take college classes in computer science 3rd , 4th block. can used credit project , awesome computer.

do intend hobby project tor want use computer? if later, wouldn't bother unless black mb in condition free (or free).

New 2014 Mac Mini as living room media unit... general questions :)

hi everyone, relatively new apple world (came on android/windows) can impressed , happy made switch hoping insight experts here new setup. got new 2014 mini our living room media unit (will playing music, netflix, movies, internet browsing etc) - havent hooked yet. have 2 bookshelf speakers, 1 sub woofer, , center speaker sound setup goes avr, , of course flat screen tv. 1) question -- mini support 2.1 sound via hdmi avr? losing audio quality or audio features using mac mini? 2) internet browsing, there app or interface make ui better fit living room tv? i've read font/icons can hard read if enlarge them because mac mini not meant big tv? 3) plan plex server , plex media player mac mini, other loading movie/tv collection , playing off tv, there else cool missing here can this? 4) if have mac mini media unit, there purpose in owning roku @ point? thank you!!   ...
