HD Spindle Speed vs Performance

hey guys :)

it's come time upgrade existing hard disk that's in ibook g4- 5400rpm, 30gb toshiba came factory installed. have quite few 2.5" pata hard drives available me, each come own pros , cons.

ideally, plan on doing upgrade in 2 phases. taking ibook g4 apart isn't i'm worried about, rather condition of plastics after screwing (and unscrewing) various components, want limit how many times take thing apart. i'd make image of hard disk using disk utility onto fw400 drive (as have no 2.5" pata 3.5" pata or usb/firewire adapters on hand @ moment) , throw in 1 of these hd's , copy image over. after i've saved up, plan on buying pata ssd owc or msata card adapter , throwing in.

here's conundrum:
have 3 hd's:
1 40gb @ 5400 rpm old tibook g4 drive (10gb upgrade, no speed change)
2 60gb @ 4200 rpm (30gb upgrade, speed drop of 1200 rpm)

i'd throw in 1 of 60gig hd's, prevent me having toss around external fw400 drive often. however, i'm worried performance hit using 4200rpm drive , it's affect on leopard. i've looked @ of white paper specs, don't tell real life performance of drive be.

said, know experience how leopard feels on 4200rpm drive compared 5400rpm? suppose turn off spotlight if it'd make things smoother, though rather it. :p

in advance!

having used laptop 4200, 5400, , 7200 drives, can tell difference between 4200 , 5400 rpms under leopard is noticeable , not use computer 1 in it.

i'm running 7200 rpm drive in a1138(last generation, high resolution) powerbook , it's very responsive, although 7200rpm drive noticeably loud(it's located right under trackpad) , big battery drain. i'm in process of cloning on msata drive, although have hit "teething pains" that worth thread of own. once transferred, may put 7200rpm drive in tibook, , i'll see how "perks up."

5400-at least in laptop-is decent compromise between performance , battery life.

if go ssd, i'd encourage go msata route rather ide ssd route. msata adapter i'm playing mimics form factor of regular 2.5" drive.
