Locating Files/Images on a MacBook Pro

recently external hard drive got dropped , no longer works. normal flow photography connect sd card reader laptop; open iphoto , import images. create folders on laptop , export images iphoto named folder. backup when needed , on time delete folders laptop. main question macbook pro os snow leopard save folders in second location on drive may able retrieve these older images. not sure if there footprint or auto save may me find these deleted folders. info or assistance, software recovery program worth trying.
